Household Hazardous Waste - What is it?
If a packaging has the words CAUTION, DANGER, POISON, or WARNING on the label, then the product has ingredients that contain one or more hazardous characteristics. If not safely stored, used, or disposed, those items can present hazards to you and your environment.
Hazardous characteristics include the following:
- Ignitable
- Corrosive
- Reactive
- Toxic
BE SURE TO READ THE LABEL FIRST.
Each of these products may pose a threat to sanitation workers or public health and the environment when improperly handled or disposed. Household hazardous waste discarded with other trash may contaminate the air or groundwater, react or explode in waste compactors, or injure personnel handling these wastes. Never dispose of hazardous materials in the storm sewer.
To avoid dangers, use hazardous products according to the label directions. If you have leftover household hazardous products please dispose of these wastes through the Hazardous Materials Waste Program.
